claud somers

The skipjack Claud W. Somers  joined our fleet in 2003 as part of our permanent collection.

This 42' vessel was built in 1911 and worked Virginia waters until 1925 when she went to Maryland owners.  She was in need of major restoration, which was completed in 2001 Reedville by a team of determined RFM volunteers working with experts at the Cockrell's Marine Railway. She represents an enduring and significant contribution to the heritage of the Chesapeake Bay. In 2005 the Somers was selected for placement in the Virginia Historic Landmark Register and the National Register of Historic Places.  Read about the restoration program: Restoration

Join us for an intimate and relaxing sightseeing sail down Cockrell's Creek to the Great Wicomico River and Chesapeake Bay. Observe first-hand the wildlife, watermen, and the beautiful shorelines and waters while learning about the history of the area, skipjacks, oysters, and the environment.

The vessel is U.S. Coast Guard certified with a licensed captain and trained volunteer crew. Reservations are required as the boat can only take 16 passengers. There is no food service on the cruise, but you may bring your own food and drink.

Cost is $25 per person ($20 for museum members) for a two and a half hour sailing cruise. To make a reservation or to inquire about a private charter, call the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum at 804 453-6529 or Email.
